Shakespeare, Shakespeare and Pay Attention

I HAD NO IDEA THERE ARE OUTDOOR SHAKESPEARE PLAYS IN SO MANY PLACES IN BC.

I ORDERED TICKETS ONLINE TO SEE MACBETH AT SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK. I HAD SEEN THE SHAKESPEARE TENT AND ADVERTISING SIGNS WHEN I WAS DRIVING AROUND VICTORIA HARBOUR. THOUGHT IT LOOKED LIKE A BEAUTIFUL SETTING AND SOMETHING I WOULD LOVE.

I HUNG OUT AT THE FISHERMAN’S WHARF IN VICTORIA AND WATCHED THE SEA PLANES LAND AND TAKE OFF, THE CUTE LITTLE WATER TAXIS GO BACK AND FORTH OVER TO CENTER OF VICTORIA AND ALL THE ACTIVITY AT THE WHARF. THEN HEADED UP THE HILL TO WATCH THE PLAY.

WHEN I GOT UP TO THE TENT IT SAID, ” KING LEAR”.. I SAID YOU’RE NOT DOING LEAR.. TONIGHT ARE YOU? OH YES THEY WERE. IT TURNS OUT THAT THEY ARE “SHAKESPEARE BY THE SEA” THE TICKETS I BOUGHT WERE “SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK” AT CAMOSEN COLLEGE. SO I PURCHASED MY SECOND SET OF SHAKESPEARE TICKETS FOR THE NIGHT.   I HAD NOTICED ANOTHER POSSIBILITY IN VANCOUVER “BARD ON THE BEACH” BUT DECIDED THAT WOULD REQUIRE AN OVERNIGHT IN VANCOUVER.  IT APPEARS SHAKESPEARE IS REALLY POPULAR UP HERE IN THE SUMMER.

WELL LET’S SAY SETTING ISN’T EVERYTHING… NOT THE BEST LEAR AND I LEFT AT INTERMISSION. HAL HOLBROOK’S LEAR AT THE OLD GLOBE WILL NEVER BE EQUALLED.

I SUSPECT “BARD ON THE BEACH” IN VANCOUVER IS THE BETTER SHAKESPEARE.

IT WAS A WONDERFUL EVENING IN A FABULOUS PLACE. I BELIEVE IN SUPPORTING  THE ARTS SO ALL WAS GOOD.

  1. Even summer at the Globe is chancy when Shakespeare is on. I don’t think we will find a better Lear than Holbrook. Enjoy your posts. Keep them coming.
